Why your Bengaluru dental clinic doesn’t show up in ChatGPT

When someone in HSR Layout asks ChatGPT for “a clear aligners dentist near me”, the answer is built from web pages the assistant is allowed to read and can understand. Most clinics that never get named are not being ignored on purpose: their websites simply give the assistant very little to work with. Below are the six things we check first, in the order we check them. None of this guarantees a mention, and nobody can honestly promise one, but each fix removes a reason to leave you out.

1. Make sure the crawler isn’t blocked

OpenAI’s crawler documentation says sites that opt out of its search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, “will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers”. Open yourclinic.in/robots.txt in a browser. If you see User-agent: OAI-SearchBot or User-agent: * followed by Disallow: /, that is the problem. Also ask whoever manages your hosting whether a “block AI bots” or bot-protection setting is switched on, because a firewall block doesn’t show up in robots.txt.

For Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google says there are no extra technical requirements: the page has to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in normal Search. In practice this is rarely the cause. None of the five dental sites in our verified audits blocked AI search crawlers, but it takes one minute to rule out.

2. Tell machines you are a dentist, and where you are

A homepage that says “Welcome” in large letters tells a person something and tells software almost nothing. Structured data (a small JSON-LD block in the page code) states it plainly: this is a Dentist, this is the name, this is the street address with PIN, these are the hours, this is the phone number. Google’s local-business documentation lists name and address as required and recommends the most specific type, so use Dentist rather than the generic Organization many website plugins add by default.

In our five verified dental audits, none had a Dentist or other local-business type and four had no structured data at all. Write the locality exactly as it appears on your signboard and Google Business Profile, for example “HSR Layout, Sector 2” or “Koramangala 5th Block”.

{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "Dentist",
  "name": "Example Dental Care",
  "url": "https://example-dental.in/",
  "telephone": "+91-80-XXXX-XXXX",
  "address": {"@type": "PostalAddress", "streetAddress": "12, 27th Main, Sector 2",
    "addressLocality": "HSR Layout, Bengaluru", "postalCode": "560102", "addressCountry": "IN"},
  "openingHoursSpecification": [{"@type": "OpeningHoursSpecification",
    "dayOfWeek": ["Monday","Tuesday","Wednesday","Thursday","Friday","Saturday"], "opens": "10:00", "closes": "20:00"}]
}

The clinic above is fictional. Use your real details, exactly as they appear on the page.

3. Give each treatment its own page

Assistants answer the question that was asked. “How much do aligners cost in Bengaluru?” gets answered from a page about aligners, not from a homepage slider. Write one page per high-value treatment (implants, aligners, root canal, children’s dentistry). Each page should say who the treatment suits, how many visits it takes, what recovery looks like and what you charge, or a price range. Plain, factual sentences are the ones that get quoted.

4. Publish your charges (Karnataka’s KPME rules expect it)

If your clinic is registered as a private medical establishment under Karnataka’s KPME Act, publishing your charges is already expected. According to The Hindu’s June 2024 report on a state health department circular, section 10(1) of the Act requires every private medical establishment to display its schedule of charges on a government website, on its own website if it has one, and on a notice board at reception. A clear charges page helps you comply, and it gives an assistant a concrete answer to the cost questions patients actually ask. Ranges are fine, for example “consultation ₹X, scaling and polishing from ₹Y”. A page that just says “call for price” gives it nothing.

The department’s June 2024 circular also asks establishments to display their KPME registration number prominently at the premises. Showing the same number on your contact page is a simple trust signal. Check the current rules with your own adviser; this guide isn’t legal advice.

5. One clinic, one set of contact details

If your homepage shows four phone numbers, an old landline and a different number in the footer, software has to guess which one is real, and so do patients. Two of the five homepages in our verified dental audits showed three or more different numbers. Pick one primary number per branch and write it the same way everywhere (for example +91 80 …). Make sure the number in your structured data and on your Google Business Profile matches the page.

6. Replace superlatives with facts

“Best dentist in Bengaluru” is not evidence. The Dental Council of India’s Revised Dentists (Code of Ethics) Regulations, 2014 treat misleading advertising and false promises as unethical. Facts work better for AI answers anyway: the dentists’ names and qualifications, their registration with the Karnataka State Dental Council, the treatments you offer, languages spoken at the clinic, Sunday hours, parking and step-free access. These are things an assistant can repeat with confidence.

  4. Is there exactly one H1 heading on the homepage?
  5. Is there a charges or price page linked from the menu?
  6. Is there one phone number per branch, the same on the site, in the schema and on Google Business Profile?
  7. Do your top three treatments each have their own page?
  8. Are dentists’ names, qualifications and council registration shown on the site?

Questions

Do we need an llms.txt file to appear in ChatGPT?

No. llms.txt is an optional, proposed format. Google says you don’t need AI text files to appear in its AI features, and no major assistant has confirmed relying on llms.txt. It is cheap to add, but fix the six items above first.

How soon will ChatGPT mention us after we fix these?

There’s no fixed timeline, and no one can guarantee a mention. OpenAI says it can take about 24 hours for its search systems to pick up a robots.txt change. Google says recrawling can take anywhere from several days to several months.

Do you have an office in Bengaluru?

No. We work remotely across Indian metros. An audit only needs your public website address.
