Why a photo-only portfolio is hard to read
Google’s image guidance says it “extracts information about the subject matter of the image from the content of the page, including captions and image titles”, and asks site owners to place images “near relevant text and on pages that are relevant to the image subject matter”. It recommends short, descriptive filenames over names like IMG00023.JPG, and descriptive alt text (Google Search Central: Image SEO best practices).
For a wedding portfolio, that means each gallery page can say in words what the page shows: for example the type of ceremony, the city or venue type, and the style of coverage.
What Google says about AI features in Search
Google says there are “no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode”, and that a page “must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet” (Google Search Central: AI features and your website). So the same basics apply: pages Google can crawl, index and read.
What to publish on your website
Google’s Business Profile help says businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up in local search results, and lists details such as address, hours and business category (Google Business Profile Help: Tips to improve your local ranking). Our recommendation is to make your own site say the same things in plain text:
- What each package includes (hours of coverage, events, photos or films delivered, albums) and how pricing works. We don’t advise on what to charge.
- The cities you are based in and the cities you travel to.
- How to check a date and send an enquiry (form or email), on a page that works on a phone.
- Your studio address or service area, written the same way as on your Business Profile.
Structured data and crawler access
Google’s local business documentation says to use the most specific LocalBusiness sub-type possible and to add the required properties (Google Search Central: Local business structured data); schema.org lists the sub-types (schema.org: LocalBusiness). Google’s structured data policies say not to mark up content that is not visible to readers of the page (General structured data guidelines).
OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot “is used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT’s search features” and that sites opted out of it “will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers” (OpenAI: Overview of OpenAI crawlers). We check that your robots.txt doesn’t block the crawlers you want.
What our audit checks for a photography website
We check whether your packages, cities, enquiry path and address are in readable text; whether gallery pages have descriptive text, filenames and alt text; whether your title and main heading say what you do and where; whether structured data is present, valid and matches the page; and whether search and AI crawlers can fetch your pages. You get a prioritised fix list. We don’t guarantee rankings, enquiries or mentions by any assistant.
Self-check
Your quick website self-check
- Each package is described in text, not only in an image, PDF or Instagram post.
- The site names the city you are based in and the cities you travel to.
- Gallery pages have a short text description, descriptive image filenames and alt text.
- There is one clear way to check a date and enquire that works on a phone.
- Address or service area matches your Google Business Profile.
- robots.txt doesn’t block OAI-SearchBot, Googlebot or the other crawlers you want.

FAQ
Our portfolio is on Instagram. Is that enough?
We can’t say how any assistant weighs other platforms. Google’s and OpenAI’s documentation is about pages their crawlers can fetch and read, so we focus on what your own website says in text.
Do we have to publish our prices?
No. That is your decision. If you don’t publish prices, you can still explain what each package includes and how to get a quote.
Will this get us more wedding bookings?
We can’t promise that. The audit tells you what Google and AI assistants can and can’t read on your site, and what to fix first.
Do you edit our photos or manage our Business Profile?
No. We audit your website and give you a fix list. Your photos, Business Profile and booking tools stay under your control.
What does the report cost?
